In The Skin of a Lion

Published by Ilayda at 9:24 pm under Class Notes

I’m pretty sure this is one of my favourite ISU choices ever. I absolutely love it. Maybe one of my favourite books in a very long time.

Ondaatje’s (awesome name… and the guy has an awesome voice too, perfect for reading, and he’s a poet… and Canadian/Sri Lankan!) writing is so poetic, especially in this book. The English Patient had more of a greyish mood, but in this it’s even more dreamlike, and woven together to make these beautiful snapshots. Ack. I can’t get enough of it.

I love it. Love it! And now off to read some more. :)

    I love ‘poetic writing’.
The writing in Love in the Time of Cholera.
    Beautiful!
Is the writing in this novel like that?
What is this book even about?
I’ve used the word ‘writing’ too many times.

I haven’t read Love in the Time of Cholera yet! :O Is it like 100 Years of Solitude? Because if it is, not exactly.

This book is about Toronto in the 20’s and 30’s… it’s sort of held together by this main character. It’s about his life mainly, but sometimes the step out of that stream and talk about another character (who somehow ends up interacting with the protagonist later). I really suck at overviews like this though. xD I’ll make you read the back-cover tomorrow.

    Listen to this though…

“Up close they are prehistoric. The insect jaws munch. Are they eating something minute or is it subliminal – the way his father chews his tongue in the fields. The kitchen light radiates through their porous wings; even those that are squat, like the peach-green aphid, appear to be constructed of powder.” (p 10)

That was one of the spots that made me need to read the book.
